Description
Volvo D5244T15 (36001935) is an all-aluminum five-cylinder engine with 20 valves and double overhead camshafts. It is fitted with a turbocharger, common rail direct injection, and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). It is most commonly known as the D5 engine, but there are three generations of D5 engines. The first generation was introduced in 2001, the second generation in 2005, and the third generation in 2009. In the autumn of 2013, the new Volvo Engine Architecture was introduced, and the 5-cylinder D5 began a process of being gradually phased out along with the V70/XC70 and first-generation XC60. Production of the D5 type engines ended in 2017.
The D5244T15 is the latest, third-generation version and was fitted on multiple Volvo cars. The third generation has a further reduction in compression ratio, a two-stage turbo system (not all), an improved exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, revised intake and exhaust ports, and a newer generation of common-rail direct injection with higher pressure and piezoelectric injectors. It produces 215 PS (158 kW) at 4000 rpm. These engines are often known as the last real Volvo engines. They are very powerful and, for that power, very economical on fuel. With proper maintenance, these engines can last up to extremely high mileages. One of the most commonly known faults for D5 engines is the failure of the alternator belt, causing the cambelt to break, which results in a huge repair bill due to the need to replace the cylinder head. This can easily be avoided with timely changes of the alternator belt and the tensioner. Costly repairs often start with poor maintenance or advice from the servicing garage.
